Q&A: Find the Mobility Gear You Need to Hit the Road

The sun is shining and the days are longer, making it the perfect time to load up for an outdoor adventure with your family!  However, for those in mobility devices, hitting the road can come with potential obstacles. In order to get the portable ramp that fits your unique needs so that you can travel safe, it’s not enough to simply buy the first available option. To get the customized solution necessary, EZ-ACCESS breaks down the facts so that you can get the right fit, the first time!

How Do I Find the Right Ramp?

Step One: In order to get the correct size, measure the height of your vehicle’s landing or top step that you’ll be using your mobility device on. If you are unable to get out and measure this height, look up the manufacturer’s specifications for your vehicle.

Step Two: In addition to the height of your vehicle landing or top step, find the recommended degree of incline for your mobility device in your manual or on the manufacturer’s website.

Step Three: Next, you’ll need to take the rise you found for your vehicle and your recommended degree of incline to the EZ-ACCESS Incline Chart.  The incline chart will tell you what ramp length you’ll need to maintain a safe degree of incline for your desired height usage.

Step Four: Finally, the issue many people forget to check on is whether the portable ramp is small enough to fit into your vehicle. You can find the size of the portable ramp when it is folded for storage on our website to make sure it will easily fit into your vehicle.

Getting the right ramp to fit your needs can be a process, however, by incorporating these easy guidelines you can get the perfect match. For additional assistance, our friendly team at EZ-ACCESS is here to help make the process go smoothly. Contact us today for more information!

Live Healthy With Limited Mobility

Living healthy with limited mobility isn't as hard as you might think.

Living healthy with limited mobility isn’t as hard as you might think.

Welcome to the New Year! We’ve said goodbye to 2014 and welcomed a new year with hope. Millions of people use this time to reflect on how they want to make themselves better in the New Year and set resolutions to try and reach those goals. One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is to live healthier.

EZ-ACCESS encourages everyone to live healthier, and wants to offer some tips for those who want to get healthy, but have limited mobility. It may take some different thinking, but there’s no reason that the New Year can’t mean a new you.

Exercising With Limited Mobility

Whether you’re in a mobility scooter, wheelchair, power chair or just have trouble moving around because of conditions like arthritis, there are exercises you can do to improve your fitness while seated. With a set of hand-held weights, you can do strength workouts to exercise your arms and chest. We also recommend things like water aerobics or swimming, which lets you improve your cardio fitness and has the added benefit of the water taking pressure off your joints.

Eating Right With Limited Mobility

The beginning of any successful weight-loss is having a balanced diet. This is especially true for those with limited mobility, as those individuals tend to have less energy due to inactivity. This means they have a lower metabolism and their bodies don’t burn calories as easily. Focus on adding protein to your diet through meat and beans, which can give you more energy. Fish meat can be especially beneficial, as it contains protein and Omega-3 fatty acid, which brings several health benefits, including helping lower your risk for heart disease.

Whatever your New Year’s resolution is, EZ-ACCESS wishes you the best of luck. If you’re hoping to improve your health, we can make it easy for you to get to where you need to go with portable ramps that can help you get to the gym or to the grocery store to get healthy food. Get in touch with us to find out how we can help you find a mobility solution.

Seated Fitness: Limited Mobility Exercise

Burn off the calories from Halloween candy with these wheelchair exercise ideas

Halloween will be here at the end of the week, and that means candy, lots and lots of candy. The first week of November is sure to be filled with people hitting their gyms to try and burn off the calories from all the extra sugar from all the candy, and that includes people with limited mobility that need to use wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
And while it may take some different exercises, EZ-ACCESS has some ideas to help our clients with limited mobility burn off those sugar calories from Halloween. These exercises may be useful for losing weight after Halloween, but they also work throughout the rest of the year, too.

  • Free weights: One of the advantages of free weights is that they are still easy to use for people in wheelchairs and mobility scooters. There are plenty of upper-body exercises that you can do with free weights that give your arms and chest a solid workout. It’s important to remember to start with a weight you’re comfortable with and add more weight or reps as you get stronger.
  • Wheelchair push-ups: If you’re not comfortable with lifting weights, you can still build strength in your arms and chest. By locking the brakes of your wheelchair and using the arm rests to stabilize yourself, you can lift yourself off the seat of the wheelchair and then sit back down slowly. You can add more reps as you build strength.
  • Keep up the cardio: Raising your heart rate can do wonders for your entire body, rather than focusing all your attention on one muscle group. Wheeling around the track is a great way work up a sweat, improve your overall fitness and get a great arm workout. You can also play a game of wheelchair basketball if you’re looking for a team sport to keep you active.

Contact us at EZ-ACCESS to see if we have anything that might help you in your efforts to be more active.
